Kokuryo Shrine started will have “Isshin Naki Sumo”, a crying baby contest in Sumostyle, on May 6th. “Naki Sumo” is an annual traditional ritual of more than 400 years, which is performed as a prayer for the good health and growth of babies.
At the contest, two babies, clad in baby-version samurai helmet and a
Sumowrestler’s ornament apron, confront each other as they are held in arms of sumowresters on the dohyo, the sumoring. As they are driven to cry loudly, the referee offers a prayer.
Babies should be between 6 months to 30 months in age.
The contest will be held in four sessions, each starting at 10;00, 10:30, 11;00 and 12 noon. The entry is accepted via shrine’s website (https://kokuryo-jinja.jp). The entry fee is 13,000 yen per baby and the shrine accepts up to 100 participating babies on first-come, first-served basis. The event will be open even if it rains.
