A unique Japanese calligraphy-painting collaboration exhibit will be held at a gallery, Ten to Mirai Design Laboratory, in Somechi area of Chofu, from Jan. 12 to Feb. 11. The two artists ---calligrapher Kimiko Nakatani and Japanese-style painter Yuka Shiren-an--- collaborated to make some art works together, combining letters/characters and drawings. They will be shown along with their own individual work of original calligraphy and paintings, which will be available for purchase. They will also offer workshops during the exhibit.
Ms. Nakatani began calligraphy since age 9 and today actively engages in teaching and designing to appeal the calligraphy’s charms and power of letters/characters.
“I hope people feel close to traditional calligraphy, get empowered by words there to enrich their life,” she says.
Ms. Yuka Shiren-an also runs own workshop of drawing on postcards, characterized by distinct colors of traditional Japanese painting, and collaborates also with musicians at improvising events since 2010.
“The exhibit may offer people bored or suppressed in their daily life an opportunity to liberate themselves, I hope,” Yuka states.
The gallery was opened in 2017 as a community’s center of art and culture by efforts of Eiji Moroi, director of Chofu Art Institute (Chofu Bijyutsu Kenkyusho).
The exhibit will be on from 14:00 to 17:00 through Feb. 11. No admission fee is charged. Access info is available at http://tentomirai.tokyo/access/ and the organizer’s phone number is
(042)486-0170.
